چکیده

Abstract The Extremely Large Telescope and the Thirty Meter will use state of art multiconjugate adaptive optics (MCAO) systems to obtain full D 4 advantage that their apertures can provide. However, reach astrometric potential these facilities for on-sky science requires understanding any residual distortions from find ways measure eliminate them. In this work, we Gemini optic system (GeMS) observations core NGC 6723 better understand performance MCAO. We develop new methods distortion fields observing system, which probe at highest possible spatial resolution. also describe examining time-variable static components distortion. When applied GeMS South Adaptive Optics Imager (GSAOI) data, are able see effect field rotator subpixel level, empirically derive due optical design GeMS/GSAOI. argue resulting maps a valuable tool monitor future instrumentation. Our overall astrometry pipeline produces high-quality proper motions with an uncertainty floor ?45 ? as yr ?1 . motion dispersion profile radius ?10? out ?1? based on ?12,000 stars. produce optical–near infrared color–magnitude diagram, clearly shows extreme horizontal branch main-sequence knee cluster.

Optimal control law for classical and multiconjugate adaptive optics.

Classical adaptive optics (AO) is now a widespread technique for high-resolution imaging with astronomical ground-based telescopes. It generally uses simple and efficient control algorithms. Multiconjugate adaptive optics (MCAO) is a more recent and very promising technique that should extend the corrected field of view. This technique has not yet been experimentally validated, but simulations ...

Sky coverage modeling for the whole sky for laser guide star multiconjugate adaptive optics.

The scientific productivity of laser guide star adaptive optics systems strongly depends on the sky coverage, which describes the probability of finding natural guide stars for the tip/tilt wavefront sensor(s) to achieve a certain performance. Knowledge of the sky coverage is also important for astronomers planning their observations. In this paper, we present an efficient method to compute the...

Tomography for multiconjugate adaptive optics systems using laser guide stars

In this paper we present a solution to the MCAO reconstruction problem using multiple laser guide stars and show that it can be interpreted as a form of back-projection tomography. It is shown that a key intermediate step is to determine a minimum-variance estimate of the index variations over the atmospheric volume. We follow the idea of Tokovinin and Viard [JOSA-A, April 2001] in initially fo...

Increased sky coverage with optimal correction of tilt and tilt-anisoplanatism modes in laser-guide-star multiconjugate adaptive optics.

Laser-guide-star multiconjugate adaptive optics (MCAO) systems require natural guide stars (NGS) to measure tilt and tilt-anisoplanatism modes. Making optimal use of the limited number of photons coming from such, generally dim, sources is mandatory to obtain reasonable sky coverage, i.e., the probability of finding asterisms amenable to NGS wavefront (WF) sensing for a predefined WF error budg...

Isoplanatism in a multiconjugate adaptive optics system.

Turbulence correction in a large field of view by use of an adaptive optics imaging system with several deformable mirrors (DM's) conjugated to various heights is considered. The residual phase variance is computed for an optimized linear algorithm in which a correction of each turbulent layer is achieved by applying a combination of suitably smoothed and scaled input phase screens to all DM's....
